The difference between die-cutting and adhesive backing

The die-cutting and adhesive-backing markets are very mature, with large demand and ample supply. Die-cutting and adhesive-backing are different processes, with adhesive-backing being significantly more difficult than die-cutting. Today, we will explain the differences between die-cutting and adhesive-backing in detail!

Die-cutting – Using a die to cut specified materials into the required shapes to meet customer assembly needs.

Adhesive-backing – As a self-adhesive sealant.

Adhesive-backing can be used to bond electronic products with lenses and LCD displays, such as mobile phones, PDAs, and laptops. It not only provides excellent adhesion but also offers shock absorption and aesthetic benefits. Various shapes and materials are die-cut according to customer requirements. Adhesive-backing is used wherever bonding, electrical insulation, high-temperature shielding, waterproofing, vibration damping, electromagnetic shielding, corrosion and fire resistance are required.

I) Double-sided Adhesive Tape Die-cutting:

Die-cutting involves applying a backing paper to an existing product and then punching it into the desired shape. Branded double-sided and single-sided tapes are generally used for bonding, fixing, conductivity, insulation, vibration damping, sealing, dustproofing, and light protection between various components.

Branded double-sided tapes include: 3M (USA), TESA (Germany), NITTO (Japan), SONY (Japan), DIC (Dai Nippon), SEKISUI (Japan), TERAOKA (Japan), Taiwan Siwei, and various single and double-sided tapes from mainland China.

II) Protective Film Die-cutting:

Protective films are classified into low-tack, medium-tack, and high-tack based on their adhesive properties. The viscosity can be selected according to the requirements of different industries.

Protective films are widely used in the manufacturing, processing, and transportation of optical films to protect them. This material has extremely high transparency, thus not impairing the product's appearance. Because it is a lightly adhesive type, it can be bonded and peeled under low tension.

(III) Die-cutting of Conductive Shielding Composite Materials:

Common Applications: Conductive shielding, one-sided conductive and one-sided insulating, double-sided insulating with conductive middle to prevent loosening, prevent impact noise, prevent adhesion, etc.

Materials Used: Imported and domestic conductive foam, conductive cloth tape, conductive copper and aluminum foil tape, conductive rubber, etc.; copper foil (Cu), aluminum foil (AL), Mylar thermally conductive silicone sheet; insulating sheet

Common Application Industries:

(1) Around LEDs: Prevents light leakage, absorbs impact, improves airtightness.

(2) Underside of PCBs: Absorbs impact, absorbs vibration, fills gaps, provides heat insulation.

(3) Keyboard pads: Resilient, non-polluting, good dimensional stability.

(4) Around batteries: Non-polluting, absorbs impact noise, improves airtightness.

(5) Foot pads: Good friction, non-polluting, good dimensional stability.

(6) Disk drive tail pads: Absorbs vibration, prevents impact noise, improves airtightness.

(7) Friction pads: Good friction, no pollution, good dimensional stability.

(8) Disc cover pads: Absorb vibration, block motor noise, provide shock absorption, and improve airtightness.

(9) Around the horn: Prevent noise and fill gaps.

(10) Around the LCD: Dustproof, absorb impact, fill gaps, and improve light shielding.

IV) Die-cut automotive foam pads

3M VHB double-sided tape, foam tape, double-stabilized tape resistant to plasticizers, and tape that reduces fogging are commonly used on automotive parts such as instrument panels, lamp housings, and decorative elements for faster, simpler, and more accurate installation. Noise reduction and vibration damping: Die-cut products made of foam, felt, or scratch-resistant textiles are applied between metal and plastic parts; between plastic parts; and between metal parts to reduce noise and vibration.
